Chicken
Yearly Christmas Portrait (with a Chicken)

You might think, being married to a photographer, that I have loads of pictures of my kids. I do.
There are thousands of photos of my kids. However, despite the enormous amount of photos
my husband takes of the family, I barely see any of them. They are buried somewhere on his
hard drive. So, every Christmas, my husband takes portraits of the kids and prints out an 16x24
and mounts them in our living room. Best Christmas gift ever!
While I love all the photos of our kids, this year, the one of my daughter with our Buff-Laced
Polish chicken caused the most laughter. As babies, the chicks liked to perch on Merced’s
shoulder, which reminded her of a parrot on a pirate. So, her theme was chicken (aka parrot)
and pirate. While the finished photo was great, it was the behind-the-scenes photos that really
made me laugh.
If you’re not a photographer (or photographer’s spouse) you might think a great photo just
happens without any effort. And sometimes they do. But the reality is that it usually requires a
lot of takes and effort to achieve the “magical” final image. I hope you enjoy these outtakes as
much as I did.
